Paloma Manguele
Dr. Paloma Manguele is a cognitive neuroscientist with teaching experience in Mozambique and England. She holds a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Sussex & University of Birmingham, funded by the British Academy.
Paloma specializes in cognitive neuroscience, with a strong focus on the intersection of human and artificial intelligence. Her research involves advanced techniques in eye-tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), machine learning and data science, particularly in developing predictive models to study cognition. Paloma’s current projects explore the effects of acute alcohol intoxication on cognitive abilities, with implications for criminal law, as well as pioneering inclusive and affordable EEG technologies aimed at reducing racial biases in neuroscience research. Paloma also holds the AFHEA – Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy from the UK.
In the classroom, Paloma emphasizes a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to teaching. Their courses blend cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and AI, equipping students with practical data science skills and a deep understanding of the ethical implications of AI technologies. Outside the classroom, Paloma is also dedicated to promoting accessible and inclusive education and has authored a chapter in the University of Sussex’s first open-access textbook, “Introduction to Biological Psychology”, among other contributions to open-access educational resources.”
