Acceptable Photo Treatments

If there is sufficient contrast between the font color and the image, the two can be used as is without an image overlay.

In cases where there is:
- not enough contrast between the desired font color and image (such as a light colored image with white type)
- a visually busy image that makes reading any type difficult
a 50% black overlay should be used over the image to ensure legibility.
Creating a Black Overlay
In Photoshop, you can either use the Shape Tool to create a black square over your shape and then reduce the Opacity to 50%. Or you can create a Solid Color Fill Adjustment Layer in black and, once created, reduce the Opacity to 50%.
Incorrect Photo Treatments

Here, the image needs a 50% black overlay because the lightness and business of the image makes it difficult to read the white text.

Do not overlay any other color onto images, be it white, gray, or another color. It cheapens the image/content and could negatively represent a student’s work.
