Dates: June 17, 2019 — June 28, 2019

Create your Artist Book Documenting the Cafe Culture in Paris

Level: Pre-College, Undergraduate

Are you fascinated by artists books, wanting to craft your own for your own pleasure or to impress recruiters, whether college admissions counselors or future employers, with a unique portfolio? Turn your experience of the typical café life in Paris – a « cultural landmark » – into an artistic and contemporary beautifully designed object.

The program will alternate field trips to a variety of cafés in different areas of the city with studio work. On site you will sketch, draw, photograph and write, following guidelines and clearly stated protocols. Life inside and outside the café will inspire you in addition to lectures about the historical and sociological aspects involved. Studio work will explore both conceptual methods and technical skills, developing your own vision and style.

Adding to the “café travel diary”, re-interpretations of the field-trip sketches, words and images will allow a rich and multilayered storytelling conveying concepts and emotions. Skills like the relationship between text and image, book/portfolio rhythm and image style will be explored, -using linocut, paper-cut, collage and photography-. You will be encouraged to take measured creative risks, and explore new media and methods within a short time span. Book binding techniques will be taught at the end of the workshop.
