John Fleetwood (South Africa) is a photography curator, educator and director of Photo:; a platform that develops and promotes socially relevant photography projects, photographers and critical visual culture. He lives and works in Johannesburg.
Education
BA Hons in Political Studies, University of Johannesburg; Further studies in Visual History, Centre for Humanities Research, University of Western Cape.
Practice and Experience
As an educator and strategist he has facilitated, organised, and collaborated on a range of training interventions and activities both with external organisations and independently through Photo:
His projects include masterclasses, workshops, and exhibitions across the African continent and internationally.
He convenes democraSEE, an award and mentorship programme. He is the convenor and founder of the Centres of Learning for Photography in Africa. From 2002-2015 Fleetwood was the director of the Market Photo Workshop.
Recent Projects
He recently curated ‘Intimacy and Resistance: An intergenerational dialogue on South African photobooks’, Photobook Week Aarhus (Denmark 2020), ‘Five Photographers: A tribute to David Goldblatt’ (Johannesburg, Maputo, Maseru, Makhanda, Durban, Bamako 2018-2019) and ‘Of traps and tropes’ as part of Kerkennah International Photography Festival (Tunisia, 2018). In 2017, he was guest editor for Aperture’s Platform Africa edition. He co-commissioned ‘A Return to Elsewhere’, a collaborative photography project on communities and dis/connect, for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2014 and the Joburg Photo Umbrella 2014. He was the co-curator for ‘Transition’ – a collaboration between South African and French photographers (Johannesburg, 2012 & Rencontres d’Arles, 2013).
