Introduction to Filmmaking: Behind the Camera
What you’ll learn
In this course, you will discover how documentary filmmaking captures reality in motion and transforms everyday life into cinema. You will learn to choose a meaningful subject, understand what makes documentary language unique, and use the camera as a tool to observe, connect, and translate the world around you. Through hands-on practice, you will become comfortable handling equipment, directing real situations, recording interviews, and shaping your footage into a compelling short film. As you explore Paris and interact with people and places, you will also gain insight into how your own perspective influences the stories you tell, developing both your technical abilities and your creative voice as a filmmaker.
Places You May Explore
Throughout the course, students may wander through Paris to find inspiration—discovering neighborhoods full of character, observing daily life in parks and cafés, exploring riversides, markets, and metro surroundings, or simply letting unexpected encounters and vibrant streetscapes guide the direction of their documentary work. The city itself becomes a living classroom, offering endless opportunities to observe, listen, and capture the world in motion.
Supplies
While PCA provides the essential tools for the class to run, students provide their own supplies. A list of required materials will be shared on the summer student portal before the start of the program. Expenses for supplies are estimated at between €30 to €150.

Prerequisites
No prior filmmaking experience is required. Students should bring curiosity, motivation, and a willingness to explore Paris, as well as the ability to work independently outside of class for shooting and editing. A basic comprehension of English is needed, as the course is taught in English.
