Graphics in Riso Printing

What you’ll learn

This course is an introduction to Riso printing, combining technical instruction with artistic exploration. Students will learn the fundamentals of the Riso printing process, from concept and visual research to design, production, and final output. You will develop skills in layout, composition, color interaction, typography, layering, and superimposition while exploring the unique, often unexpected, qualities of the medium. Emphasizing a DIY and experimental approach, the course encourages students to explore personal expression, integrate “happy accidents,” and contextualize their work through historical and contemporary artistic references. By the end of the course, students will have produced a personal body of Riso prints and a micro-edition, gaining confidence in both creative and technical aspects of this hybrid printing technique.

Places You May Explore

Students will engage with Parisian locations for inspiration and material collection, such as the Bois de Boulogne for leaf foraging, local galleries, and independent bookshops. Visits provide opportunities to observe contemporary graphic design, illustration, and printmaking practices in the city.

Supplies

While PCA provides the essential tools for the class to run, students provide their own supplies. A list of required materials will be shared on the summer student portal before the start of the program. Expenses for supplies are estimated at between €30 to €150.

Course highlight

  • Technical introduction to the Riso printer, pre-press preparation, file setup, color separation, and printing workflows.

  • Production of experimental posters, prints, postcards, and small editorial projects.

  • Hands-on workshops in bookbinding and creating micro-editions.

  • Exploration of color layering, overlays, typography, and composition in a playful, DIY context.

  • Study of historical and contemporary artistic references from independent and underground publishing.

  • Final collaborative project: a collective book combining individual contributions, culminating in a final exhibition and critique.

Prerequisites

No prior experience with Riso printing is required. Basic knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign is helpful but not necessary, as tutorials will be provided. Students should have an interest in design, experimentation, and hands-on artistic practices, and be motivated to solve technical challenges and embrace experimental outcomes.
