The Royal Danish Academy’s Institute of Architecture and Design and Grundejernes Investeringsfond (Danish Landowners’ Investment Fund) invite architects, building industry actors and homeowners to a public presentation and discussion of graduate student Claire Kimball Johnson’s thesis project – a strategy to increase architect-led sustainable renovations of private residential properties. The project is a response to the EU Commission’s New European Bauhaus – a call for high-quality, sustainable and inclusive design solutions.

More about the project:
Responding to a surge in renovations and a need for a sustainable methodology, Claire Kimball Johnson’s architecture master thesis project proposes a strategy to increase holistic sustainability in private residential renovations. Through a low-cost digital sustainability certification, the project explores how architects can take the lead in a new wave of residential renovations stimulated by the EU Commission’s New European Bauhaus initiative.

Studies show buildings with a sustainability certification outperform conventional buildings on environmental, economic and social parameters. Not surprisingly, developers and building owners hoping to benefit from the economic and societal benefits that certification can offer have increased over the past few years. However, existing certifications usually apply to new-build, large scale projects and focus on energy improvements.

How could residential renovations profit from the benefits of sustainability certification using a holistic approach?

Architects, homeowners and construction industry professionals are encouraged to join the conversation in this 90-minute webinar to contribute feedback and ideas.
