Behind Our Eyes (2018) introduces in turn the portraits of three individuals living non-conformist lives, from adulthood to teenage years and finally to a childlike state.

A homeless street performer is captured wandering around Paris, filmed as if it was a small village. Aliasare, a painter, is busy trying to find brief glimpses of beauty. A young blind man runs through a forest in search of a lost sensation. Nature, perceived as a magic power, prevails in every episode: going beyond being a simple setting, it’s a way for the three characters to escape loneliness, in a pantheistic approach. The recurring close-ups on hands performing trivial tasks point to a haptic cinema, in which sight is guided by touch, and the camera stays as close as possible to bodies and textures.

Anton Bialas is a French-Swedish director born in 1990. Behind Our Eyes is his third film. In his works he explores the cinematic possibilities in the sensible folds between documentary and fiction. His following films premiered in major European Film Festivals: À l’Entrée de la Nuit (Berlinale, 2020), Groupe Merle Noir (Visions du Réel, 2021) and Raie Manta (Cannes Semaine de la Critique, 2022).
