Text and language are often incorporated in Fisher’s work, both as a means of visual poetry and to give voice to those whose experiences are represented. In addition to being a vehicle for contextualization, she uses the shape and form of handwriting as a drawing device. Her current work, LA MER À BOIRE, situates the shores of Calais as a repository of trauma. Pulling from testimony from one of the survivors of the November 2021 English Channel Disaster, Fisher explores the anthropology of migration by embroidering the survivor’s words onto large-scale dye sublimation textile prints. Juxtaposing this new work alongside a body of knitted blankets she created while in residence at Holocaust Centre North, a conversation between past and present emerges, revealing the complexities of displacement and the broader sociopolitical context that undermines it.

About the artist

Laura Fisher is an interdisciplinary artist who incorporates drawing and textiles to explore contemporary issues of identity, displacement, and ecologies of war. Through her work, she weaves together the threads of lesser-told stories in order to reposition history toward a more dialectical, human-centered context, questioning the implications of figurative memory and deconstructing the ripples of intergenerational trauma.
