John Chua exhibits his feature film at UFVA's 2019 conference

The University Film and Video Association, the American organization for faculty teaching and working in moving images, has chosen John Chua’s feature-length documentary, Cut: Exposing FGM Worldwide, to screen at its annual conference in Minneapolis July 30-August 2.

His project began in 2013 as a series of documentary shorts for Al Jazeera, BBC, and The Guardian. One of these shorts won a PBS prize followed by the network’s broadcast across America in December 2017 and was screened at American Cinematheque’s Worlds Within World in 2018, co-presented by the International Documentary Association.

The shorts were compiled into this new feature-length documentary which premiered at Terre des Femmes Film Festival in Germany last November and was released internationally this spring by Gravitas Ventures, the film distributor and subsidiary of German TV network ProSieben. The UN deems female genital cutting a human rights violation and John Chua, serving as investigator, director, producer and camera operator, is the first person to document it as a native phenomenon on every inhabitable continent.
