Screening of "The Swimmer"

In presence of the director Gabriela Guillermo

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to a screening of The Swimmer, followed by a Q&A with its director, Uruguayan filmmaker Gabriela Guillermo.

Sponsored by the Photography Department and the Social and Experimental Documentary course led by Maximiliano Battaglia, this event promises an insightful discussion on the film’s themes and production.

Gabriela Guillermo is a Uruguayan film director and educator. Although her first passion was biology, she fell in love with cinema after watching Kurosawa’s Ikiru at the Uruguayan Cinemateca. The swimmer is about a young swimmer who finds himself drawn to writing, narrating his first encounters with love and the sense of aimlessness he feels before discovering his true passion. Through his voice, he transports us to moments where he and the audience shape his memories together. We never see him or the other characters directly; instead, visuals and sound open a space for us to relive these memories, allowing them to come alive in our minds.
