Wave Hill’s Visual Arts Program presents the work of contemporary artists who engage in a dialogue with nature, culture, and site.

A Call to Artists for the 2019 Sunroom Project Space and New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships is underway. Applicants for the Van Lier Fellowship will also be considered for the Sunroom Project Space alone; there is no need to submit two separate applications. The same jury will review the Van Lier Fellowship and Sunroom Project Space applications.

Sunroom Project Space

The Sunroom Project Space is a venue for New York-area emerging artists to develop a new site-specific project to be exhibited in a six-week solo show in one of the two windowed sunrooms in Wave Hill’s Glyndor Gallery. Five artists will be selected.

Work in all media will be considered and artists are encouraged to respond to and engage with this unique space. The selected artists will be awarded an honorarium of $1,800 and will have between six and 12 months to develop their ideas and to create new work for the project space. The Sunroom exhibitions will be on view for a period of six weeks each from April through December 2019.

New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships

In 2019, Wave Hill will administer two Fellowships on behalf of the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust. The Fellowship provides support for talented, culturally diverse young artists who are seriously dedicated to a career in the arts. The current (2018) Van Lier Fellows are Ashton Agbomenou and Yelaine Rodriguez.

The Van Lier Fellowship is a one-year fellowship that will be awarded to two New York City-based artists, who are 30 years of age or younger (born in 1989 or after) and are not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. The fellowship provides emerging artists from culturally diverse backgrounds valuable mentorship opportunities, including working with the curatorial staff, artists and arts professionals to prepare and promote their projects and to define career paths over the course of the program (January through December 2019).

Each Van Lier Fellow will receive a stipend of $8,000.

The goal for each Van Lier Fellow at Wave Hill is to develop the skills and professional credit needed to establish a successful career in art.
