Camille Boulay’s work explores rebuilding identity through the creative process.

Boulay is interested in representing movement, closeness and distance, links between people through maps and diagrams using “office supplies” but also contrasting this through more intimate mediums such as printmaking and textiles to representing emotional relationships.

“I began with mapping out the different moves my family made throughout my life, using a different color to represent each family member, seeing where we overlapped and where our lives took different paths. Through one of my diagrams I realized that my family had lived as a unit under the same roof for a total of only seven years. I then began to think about relationships and how all the different moves and the physical distance that came between us, which then evolved to emotional distance, had affected us. I wanted to represent what this could look like through the use of red and blue colored pencils, red for hot, meaning closeness, blue for cold, meaning distance. I found that my drawings had something of an electrical or plumbing circuit, close to architectural blueprints, as though these diagrams of relationships were predefined, perhaps factory-made.”

Camille Boulay’s solo exhibit in La Vitrine will be up until March 6, 2022.
