PCA Talks: Klaus Speidel

Klaus Speidel

Meet with us for a new PCA Talk on September 21, 2021 at 6:30 PM CET, with Klaus Speidel, an artist and curator specializing in art and image theory.

Can drawings capture thoughts? In which ways can we systematically and productively distinguish different approaches to drawing? Why can seemingly abstract drawings sometimes appear as more adequate representations of objects and events in the world than more realistic ones?

In his PCA Talk, Klaus Speidel will offer personal answers to these questions, present his approach to drawing and introduce the exhibition and publication project he is currently working on with Nikolaus Gansterer.

Their joint exhibition Movements of Thinking / Figures de pensée is scheduled to open at Centre d’art Les Tanneries in Amilly on 25th of September.

For this project, the theorist and the artist have worked together for two years, trying to capture, reflect and develop the subtle and often fleeting images that arise while reading philosophical remarks by Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Through deliberately playful and performative cross-readings of individual paragraphs, exemplary thoughts are transformed into sketches and drawings or played out collaboratively on installation table settings that can be performed with other participants.

Klaus Speidel holds a PhD in philosophy from Sorbonne University and was in charge of a postdoc project at the Lab for Cognitive Research in Art History at Vienna University. He has curated many exhibitions, among them several drawing exhibitions. Drawing after Digital focused on the transformations of drawing in the digital age. De l’écriture de l’écriture looked at artists whose drawing practice involves writing. Speidel regularly publishes on contemporary drawing in magazines like Artpress, Art Newspaper and in catalogs.
